The wunderkind of Pop Art – Janusz Orzechowski

P1018746

Janusz Orzechowski is an artist from a completely different realm. He approaches painting as a futuristic adventure straight out of a colorful fairy tale. His art clearly goes against the grain. I love this kind of breaking the mold and drawing handfuls of fresh ideas. Pop art, loosely translated, means popular art. However, in this case, it’s more like art infused with a surreal twist. I invite you to read the interview and discover the art of Mr. Janusz Orzechowski.

A warm welcome

Could you tell us how your journey with art began?

In fact, everything really started to take shape during my university years. Naturally, I chose my university based on my interests, and there, under the guidance of experts, I honed my skills in drawing, painting, and graphic design.

What is your greatest source of inspiration?

I enjoy traveling, nature, and film. In my early youth, I was inspired by comics and computer games. All of this has shaped my current style.

Pop Art or Surrealism?

I use and combine these two styles. Pop Art. In my interpretation, it’s comic-style collages, while surrealism takes the form of so-called post-apocalyptic landscapes.

What direction are your paintings heading in, and what do they express?

In post-apocalyptic landscapes, I strive to depict the triumph of nature over the ruins of modern human civilization.

From what I can see, you love large-format images. Could you tell me why? Do they look better in interiors?

A large format creates a bigger impact in the interior, but it’s also easier to paint such pieces and you can fit more on them.

I notice many parallels with comic book characters in your works. They appear in many of your paintings—where does this fascination with cartoon heroes come from?

As I mentioned at the beginning, the inspiration came from comics and computer games. As we can see, in recent years comic book characters have been experiencing a renaissance in cinema.

Which interior style best complements your painting?

I would describe my style as realism, collage, pop art, surrealism, and figurative art.

Is contemporary young art today strongly seeking inspiration from the streets and what is happening in the broadly understood mass media?

My paintings sometimes resemble street art, but I have never painted on walls. As for social media, it’s an excellent tool for promoting art and attracting clients.

What is the largest painting you have ever created?

My largest work to date is a “hexaptych,” which is a painting composed of six panels, each measuring 100x100cm, resulting in a total size of one meter in height and three meters in length.

Is the blending of figures, cultures, and eras in painting your own idea?

Yes, but later I saw many works like that. It’s hard to come up with something truly innovative in this field anymore.

Who buys your works?

I used to sell paintings in Warsaw. Now I run a physical gallery in Paris. Clients from abroad, Europe and beyond, started to appear,

According to Jan Orzechowski, what direction is contemporary art heading in?

Tough question. At one point, I thought abstraction would dominate painting. But I’m seeing more and more works that are highly skilled, figurative, and draw inspiration from the old masters.

Are there any topics you would never take on?

Everything has its limits—I don’t like things that cross them.

P1018790

The craziest painting you’ve ever created?

There were quite a few. I’d probably choose “Battle in the Dream Factory,” an interpretation of the “Battle of Grunwald”—a 100x200cm canvas featuring around 200 characters from movies, comics, and games, all mixed together on Matejko’s composition.

Is Pop Art aimed at the eccentric or the sophisticated art lover?

I often don’t know the final client of my artworks when the sale goes through a gallery, so I don’t always know the buyers personally.

Last question. What will be the theme of your next painting?

My latest idea, which I’ve already started painting, is futuristic cityscapes in a cyberpunk style inspired by the movie Blade Runner.

Thank you for the pleasant conversation. I wish you continued success in creating such fascinating works and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for our collaboration!
