Neons, leggings, and lace – the trends of the ’80s are making a comeback

The style of the last two decades of the previous century is very familiar to all of us. The era’s passion for sports and highlighting one’s figure was clearly reflected in fashion. That’s why tight-fitting outfits, bold prints, comfortable footwear, and a variety of accessories reigned supreme. Fashion was meant to be colorful and daring, and in the 80s, women used their clothing to express not only their personalities but also their lifestyles. The upcoming season marks a partial return to the trends that dominated back then. While many of them have already become a permanent part of today’s fashion, there are some that we had managed to forget. Here are the upcoming trends from the 80s.

Leg warmers

Leg warmers are undoubtedly one of the most eye-catching trends this autumn and winter. Introduced at the end of last year by brands such as Miu Miu, they quickly became a true hit of the season. They’re worn in a variety of ways, often paired with mini skirts or skirts and loafers, or with equally on-trend emu boots. Leg warmers look incredibly feminine, but also serve their original purpose—something that becomes an extra advantage during freezing weather. Borrowed from the ’80s, they’re gaining more and more fans, and it’s no wonder—they’re the perfect finishing touch for outfits on colder days.

Velour

This fabric was undoubtedly a leading trend in the 80s, and although most of us associate the iconic velour tracksuits mainly with the 2000s, they actually appeared on the streets much earlier. The advantages of this material speak for themselves—velour is soft, pleasant to the touch, and fits the body well. Additionally, a velour tracksuit referenced the sporty lifestyle that was highly valued at the time. While we’ll be wearing sporty velour pieces most eagerly in the upcoming season, other wardrobe items like sweatshirts, dresses, and even blazers are also gaining popularity. It seems that the trend of wearing velour is making a comeback in a completely new form.

Bold colors — the hallmark of the ’80s

Although the spring/summer season once belonged to pastels, in 2023 vibrant colors full of energy and optimism will take the lead. Energetic red, fuchsia, and of course neons—it’s impossible to go unnoticed in such outfits. The biggest fashion houses have paid tribute to the ’80s, with neon aesthetics appearing at, among others, Balenciaga, Fendi, and Bottega Veneta.

There are once again plenty of fashion solutions in this area—wearing colorful tights has recently become popular, adding a vibrant touch to any outfit and clearly referencing that era. However, if you prefer a minimalist approach, opt for just a small neon accent and let it stand out. One thing is certain: neon is making a comeback and will be the perfect way to bid farewell to winter and its typically muted tones.

Lace

Another trend making a comeback straight from the ’80s is wearing lace. Although not fitting the sporty style, lace was adored by women for its delicacy and subtlety. And just like back then, blouses and dresses made from this fabric will be incredibly fashionable in the upcoming spring/summer 2023 season. Today, designers are experimenting with lace, creating much bolder looks than before, yet still maintaining good taste. Additionally, for several months now, we’ve seen a growing trend for handmade clothing, most often crocheted or knitted. This is a new take on lace, which is set to return to our wardrobes once again.
