Honda fans are not in short supply, and they may yet come. All thanks to a new car that the Japanese conglomerate wants to build in cooperation with SONY. Afeela is to be a “computer on wheels” and, although it is unlikely to be classified as a segment luxury cars, moving it around can be a great luxury in truth! Among other things, the vehicle is to be equipped with artificial intelligence functions and… augmented reality.

Two Japanese giants – Honda and SONY – have joined forces in a joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility Inc. to give us a unique product. Their electric car is to be a “computer on wheels” – a car that, with its accumulation of electronics, will probably be rivaled only by modern fighter jets!

Afeela is expected to be an electrically powered car equipped with a range of modern technologies. Among other things, the prototype is equipped with artificial intelligence tools, hundreds of sensors and software that will give the vehicle autonomous functions. It will also be a “customized” car – attached to its owner. If this is his or her will, no one but him or her will get inside and be able to start the car. All this is due to the facial recognition function, which we know from smartphones, among other things.

The joint child of SONY and Honda will offer an equally cosmic experience inside the vehicle. The main attraction will be a touch-sensitive dashboard, stretching from the left to right doors of the car. The interactive display will show not only data about the car itself, but also entertainment – including a feature to watch movies or play PlayStation 5 games from SONY. The controllers will, of course, be given only to passengers – except when stationary. Other than that, the driver will have more basic functions, namely music and navigation.

Afeela – an electric car like the F-35! SONY and Honda are building a time machine that will take us to the future of motoring

Best for dessert. What would you say to adding features native to state-of-the-art stealth fighters to your car? A good look at the specifics of the American F-35 aircraft will tell us that its pilot can drive the machine using virtual reality. If we put on the helmet of an F-35 pilot – interestingly enough – we would see neither the cockpit, nor the walls of the aircraft, nor even the wings. Using virtual reality, the pilot of this fighter jet can “see through walls,” among other things, thanks to cameras mounted around the fuselage.

It was only curiosity, which is expected to realize what Afeela can do. A similar system is to be implemented in Honda and SONY’s electric car. Virtual reality will ensure that nothing will limit visibility on the road. Wearing VR goggles, we will be able – like the pilots of the aforementioned F-35 – to “see through the body” of the car. The exterior of the vehicle will be equipped with more than 40 sensors, including cameras, radar, ultrasound and lidar. The future is now!

“Afeela represents our concept of an interactive relationship, where people experience interactive mobility and where mobility can detect and understand people and society through the use of sensory technologies and artificial intelligence,” – Sony Honda Mobility CEO Yasuhide Mizuno said, as quoted by The Verge.
